How the list is organized

Bloomfield sits in Essex County, close to most of the places we serve. The 39 towns in eleven counties are grouped below by the kind of housing they have, because a prewar two family house in Paterson and a 1990s townhouse in Hillsborough need different work on the same question. Find your county or town below.

Seven kinds of neighborhoods we work in

  • Farm country on oil heat

Readington, Tewksbury and Lebanon Townships are rural, mostly detached houses with heavy oil heat. In Lebanon Township, 52.5 percent of households burn fuel oil, and wood is the main heat in 7.3 percent.

  • Newer subdivisions and townhouses

Clinton, Raritan, Hillsborough, Bridgewater, Bernards, Franklin, Voorhees and Gloucester Townships were built mostly after 1970, with many factory-built fireplaces, metal chimneys in framed chases and townhouse dryer vents that run to the roof.

  • Prewar city blocks

Jersey City, Hoboken, Union City, West New York and Somerville have dense older housing, row houses and walk-ups where one boiler chimney often serves a whole building.

  • Older suburbs

Bloomfield, Collingswood and Haddonfield have some of the oldest housing we see. In Haddonfield, 50.1 percent of homes were built before 1940, and in Bloomfield half were built before 1950.

  • Two to four family neighborhoods

Newark, Irvington, East Orange, Flemington, Passaic and Paterson have many multi-family houses and apartment buildings. In Paterson, 54.6 percent of homes are in two to four unit buildings, where one stack carries several flues.

  • Postwar suburbs

Union Township, Clifton, Fair Lawn, Manville, Pennsauken, Cherry Hill, Edison, Parsippany, Plainfield and New Brunswick grew fast after the war, and many of their houses still have the brick chimney they were built with.

  • Towns near the water

Bayonne, Elizabeth, Perth Amboy and Middletown sit by bays and rivers, where wind and salt air wear on caps, flashing and the top of the chimney first.

A hundred years of lime mortar requires a careful, low-RPM touch, and that antique sensibility was obvious in the preservation-grade sweeping of our 1910 hearth.

  • Stephanie F.

Soot was cleaned from the flue lining with non-abrasive polymer heads, leaving the critical structural integrity of the ceramic glaze undamaged.

  • Benjamin H.

Before any damage to the fundamental integrity of the ceiling, we were able to fix the outside chimney leaks after identifying significant water damage behind the lead counter-flashing.
